Jess Shepherd, global digital and strategy director of Coast talks to Retail Week her proudest achievement and the England rugby team.

What was your first job in retailing?

I first got my passion for retail when I worked at a branch of Monsoon while at college.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

Ted Baker. It has delivered innovation and growth while staying true to the character of the brand and delivering those little details all the way.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

Being detail obsessed. While it has its place, sometimes you have to accept that pace and delivery is more important than having ironed out every last detail.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

It would have to be Coast chairman Derek Lovelock. From him I’ve learnt to keep the brand at the heart of what you’re doing, trust in your instinct and keep close to your customer.

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

Soak it all up. Take every opportunity to get involved in new areas – you’ll be amazed at what it can add to your role.

What keeps you awake at night?

Not a lot. Occasionally that mental to-do list can take over, although putting it into my phone for the next day normally relieves that stress.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Listening to our customers. Hearing about how their experience with us has helped make an event special for them.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Hearing my team talk about their passion for their jobs.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

Team manager of the England rugby team has always been my dream.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

Vintage Home – a boutique homewares shop in Westerham, Kent. It’s a treasure trove of stylish things for the house.

What was your last purchase?

Two pairs of fabulous shoes from Coast.
