Amazon has launched its Just Walk Out technology for the first time in a full-size Amazon Fresh store.
The new store in Bellevue, Washington, allows customers to decide between the traditional checkout experience or skipping the queue completely.
Just Walk Out lets shoppers who show proof of their Amazon account to enter the store and shop as normal. Shoppers can scan a QR code in the Amazon app or scan their palm using Amazon’s contactless identity service Amazon One. They can also insert a debit or credit card linked to their account.
Any goods added to a physical trolley are automatically added to the customer’s virtual cart. If an item is returned to the shelf, it is simultaneously removed from the virtual cart.
When the customer has completed their grocery shop, they show the same proof of membership that granted them entry to the store to exit.
Amazon staff will also be on hand to help customers pay for items through “traditional checkout lanes”.
The latest Amazon Fresh store will include the typical offerings of a supermarket – fresh produce, meat, seafood and pastries will be available throughout the store.
Amazon vice president of physical retail and technology Dilip Kumar said: “Customers have enjoyed the effortless shopping experience enabled by our Just Walk Out technology at our Amazon Go, Amazon Go Grocery, Amazon Fresh stores in the UK and third-party retailer stores.
“The feedback has been fantastic, with customers noting that skipping the checkout allows them to save time and reduce contact in stores.”
“Bringing Just Walk Out technology to a full-size grocery space with the Amazon Fresh store in Bellevue showcases the technology’s continued ability to scale and adapt to new environments and selection.”
