This ranking, which looks at the level of international sales generated by UK-based retailers, contains few surprises with some of the UK’s largest high street retailers represented in the top 15.
Tesco continues to top this ranking, but has seen its lead over number two Kingfisher reduce in recent years as it has sold off various international operations in recent years, most notably its South Korean business in September 2015.
A retailer that has steadily improved its position over the last few years is Primark, which has seen its international sales soar by over 150% over the last five years to an estimated £3bn. It now sits just behind Dixons Carphone in fourth place and will surely be looking to crack the top three now that its expansion in the US is getting underway.
Other retailers that have moved up the ranks include sports retailers Sports Direct and JD Sports, both of which have grown their presence in mainland Europe through various strategic acquisitions.
Strong overseas growth at Asos, which now generates 55% of its sales internationally, has seen it solidify its position in the top 10.
Methodology
This ranking covers British retailers whose head office – or that of its holding company – is based in the UK. International retail sales figures have been used where possible, but these are not consistently reported for all retailers.
